Look beyond the general climate
A project described as “outdoor” can include many different exposure conditions. A freely exposed vertical panel dries differently from a sheltered crevice, a planter interior or a support below a leaking joint. Review the actual geometry and water paths. The development of a protective patina relies on suitable conditions; permanent dampness should not be treated as equivalent to regular wetting and drying.
Identify chloride sources
Coastal airborne salts and road-deicing salts can influence suitability and performance. There is no universal distance from the coastline that establishes acceptability for every site. Tell the project engineer about marine exposure, salt spray, traffic, road treatments and any known contamination. A pre-weathered finish does not change the underlying environmental assessment.
Detail for drainage and access
Provide water-shedding paths and avoid details that trap moisture or debris. Consider runoff staining on nearby concrete, stone, paving or other finishes, especially during initial weathering. Keep drainage features and inspection points accessible after installation. Maintenance planning should address the whole assembly, including joints, fixings and places where dirt can accumulate.
Keep the specification project-specific
Use the responsible designer’s requirements for material, corrosion allowance, protective measures and inspection. Where bare weathering steel is unsuitable, the project may need a different material or a specified coating strategy. Include the site exposure and assembly drawings in your RFQ so those requirements remain visible.
