Use a consistent calculation
For a rectangular steel blank, a practical planning estimate uses a nominal density of 7,850 kg/m³. With all dimensions in millimeters: weight in kilograms = thickness × width × length × 0.00000785. For example, a 6 × 1,000 × 2,000 mm blank has a theoretical weight of 94.2 kg; ten identical blanks total 942 kg before packaging. This is a nominal estimate, not a certified shipping or invoicing weight.
Know what the estimate excludes
Real thickness and dimensional tolerances change actual mass. Holes, cutouts and edge profiling remove material, while folded geometry needs the developed blank dimensions. Packing, pallets, spacers and protection add shipping weight. For freight planning, distinguish net material mass from gross packed mass, and ask for the final package dimensions as well as weight.
Compare the same supply scope
Two prices may cover different grades, delivered conditions, inspection records or processing. Identify whether the quote is based on stock plate, cut blanks or finished panels; whether the quantity is measured by piece, theoretical weight or actual weight; and how scrap and cutting allowances are treated. Keep pre-weathering, sample approval and any coating process as explicit line items or clearly defined inclusions.
Build a useful cost comparison
Compare the material, processing, documents, packing, delivery basis and schedule together. Include the named destination or port when discussing freight. Do not assume that an attractive material unit price includes the surface treatment or fabrication shown in a photograph. Send the full size list and required finish with your RFQ so the quotation can set out what is included and what still needs confirmation.
