A complete JIS material reference
SMA490BW identifies a weathering steel grade within JIS G 3114 for welded structural applications. Retain the full designation when preparing a material schedule or quotation. SMA490BW should not be shortened to a generic “corten plate” description or automatically exchanged for SPA-H.

Welded structures and unpainted use
The W variant relates to unpainted-use material requirements. It does not approve every outdoor environment. Review drainage, sheltered surfaces, moisture retention and chloride exposure with the project engineer, together with rust-runoff control and any coating strategy.
For welded components, submit connection drawings and the specified inspection level. Fabrication procedures and welding consumables need their own review. Modified producer designations with extra suffixes should be evaluated separately rather than treated as the same order description.

- Identify impact tests or other supplementary requirements explicitly.
