Where Type 2 fits
ASTM A606/A606M addresses high-strength, low-alloy sheet and strip with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance. The current edition identifies Type 2 separately from Types 4 and 5. Do not reduce the order to “Corten sheet”: the type and edition are needed to check chemistry, mechanical acceptance and product form.
Type 2 is a copper-bearing specification. An unpainted exterior appearance should not be assumed from the type name alone. If the project expects an exposed patina, state the exposure, coating decision and appearance requirements for engineering review. Type 4 and Type 5 should also be specified by their own requirements rather than treated as automatic substitutes.
Details that make a Type 2 offer comparable
| RFQ field | What to provide or confirm |
|---|---|
| Designation | ASTM A606/A606M Type 2 and the edition required by the project |
| Form | Hot- or cold-rolled sheet or strip; coil or cut length as specified |
| Size schedule | Thickness, width, length or coil details, quantity and tolerances |
| Finish | Mill finish, coating or a separately agreed surface treatment |
| Acceptance | Material identification, inspection records and any project tests |
Before sending the purchase request
Share the drawing revision and identify whether parts are supplied as flat sheet, cut blanks or processed panels. Describe fabrication, visible-face handling and packing separately from the material designation. State destination and delivery basis so quotations cover the same scope.
- Record the complete Type 2 designation on every line item.
- Ask for the proposed producer, product form and dimensions before approving a substitution.
- Make the exposed-surface or coating decision explicit.
- Match certificates and item markings to the purchase order.
Availability, exact dimensions, processing and lead time depend on the reviewed inquiry; this page does not represent live stock.
Common buyer questions
Is Type 2 the same material as Type 4?
No. They are separate A606 types. Compare the agreed edition and the offered material documentation before accepting a change.
Can I specify Type 2 as heavy plate?
First check the standard’s product-form and thickness scope. A heavy plate request may need a different material specification.
What if I need an unpainted façade?
Send the exposure and design details for review. Patina performance depends on the material selected, drainage, wet/dry cycling and the site environment.
