What the Type 5 designation tells a buyer
ASTM A606/A606M-25 distinguishes Type 5 from the copper-bearing Type 2 and from Type 4. Type 5 includes additional alloying requirements. That distinction matters when checking an offer and the material certificate; “weathering sheet” by itself does not identify the type.
The standard describes use in bare condition for Type 5 when properly exposed. It does not promise a fixed rust colour, eliminate site assessment or establish a service life for every location. For comparisons, see Type 2 and Type 4.

Plan the surface as part of the specification
For an unpainted façade or fabricated sheet component, show where water drains, where moisture may remain trapped, and whether marine salts or deicing salts are present. Agree any initial appearance sample and staining controls; natural weathering varies with time and exposure. See the exposure review and coastal design guide.
A material type alone cannot approve an outdoor detail. The design team should review the actual site and any coating or maintenance requirements.
How to request Type 5 material
- Identify Type 5 on the drawing, schedule and RFQ.
- Provide every size, quantity, tolerance and delivered form.
- Describe intended bare exposure or coating and visible-surface expectations.
- State inspection records, identification, packing and destination.
We review availability, achievable dimensions, processing and lead time against the supplied specification. No fixed stock or certified origin is implied by this page.
Does Type 5 automatically replace Type 4?
No. A change of type requires review against the project specification, fabrication needs and acceptance documents.
Will a Type 5 sheet always form a protective patina?
Performance depends on exposure and detailing. Persistent wetness or salt contamination requires project-specific assessment.
