Corten B weathering steel plate
Corten B is a weathering steel designation used in plate and fabricated structural applications. SHANDONG DAZHI helps buyers turn the material callout, drawing and delivery needs into a defined inquiry. Supply must be agreed against the proposed producer specification and order documents.
A weathering surface can reduce the need for painting in suitable exposure conditions. It does not remove the need for an engineered design, inspection, drainage or assessment of the environment. State whether the plate will be a structural component, an architectural feature or a processing blank.
Corten B parameters to check
As a producer-specific reference, SSAB's COR-TEN® B data lists minimum yield strength of 345 MPa, minimum tensile strength of 485 MPa and phosphorus up to 0.035%. Use the actual offered mill specification to confirm requirements; these reference values do not certify SHANDONG DAZHI material.

The ordered thickness and product form matter when reviewing test results, tolerances and processing. Add service-temperature or impact-test requirements explicitly. A material name without those details is insufficient for a demanding structural order.

- Outdoor structures: plate components, columns and fabricated members designed for the specified material.
- Bridge and infrastructure components: follow the engineer's material specification and acceptance requirements.
- Transport and equipment components: define loading, fabrication and environmental conditions.
Bridge work may require a separate bridge specification and supplementary testing. Neither Corten B nor an A588 product description establishes approval for a particular bridge.
Fabrication and purchase requirements
Provide drawing revisions, cutting allowances, bend details and weld requirements. Select welding procedures and consumables for the material, thickness and service conditions, including any requirements for the appearance or weathering behaviour of exposed welds. Frequently asked questions
How does Corten B differ from Corten A?
Producer specifications can differ in chemistry, available forms and dimensions. For example, the cited SSAB data has a lower phosphorus limit for B. Compare the complete specification rather than assuming one is always stronger or better.
Can Corten B replace ASTM A588?
Only if the offered material meets the project's specified A588 grade, edition, product form and all acceptance requirements. A commercial designation alone is not proof of equivalence.
Can the plate be used unpainted?
That depends on the exposure and detailing. Consider salt, persistent moisture, crevices, drainage and debris accumulation before approving bare weathering steel.
What documents should accompany the inquiry?
Include the material schedule, dimensions, drawings, required mill test certificate and traceability, plus any impact testing, inspection or delivery conditions.
