Corten Steel Price Guide

A useful corten steel price starts with a defined order. Compare material, processing, finish and delivery on the same basis before choosing a supplier.

How much does Corten steel cost?

There is no single price that covers every Corten steel sheet, plate or fabricated panel. Grade, dimensions, quantity, processing and delivery all affect the quotation. This guide explains how to build a comparable cost request; it does not publish a live market price or a standing offer.

Ask for a dated quotation with currency, validity period, payment terms, billing weight basis and a clear list of inclusions. Use the same specification and destination for every supplier. A price for an untreated mill plate cannot be compared directly with the price of a pre-weathered, folded panel.

The main factors in a Corten steel quote

Cost factorWhat to clarify
Grade and documentationCorten A, Corten B or the exact ASTM/EN designation; mill origin, testing and traceability.
Thickness and sizeDimensions, tolerances and whether the order uses standard plates or custom blanks.
Quantity and cutting yieldPiece count, total mass, nesting, minimum order quantity and any scrap allowance.
FabricationCutting, drilling, perforating, bending, welding and edge finishing.
Surface finishAs-rolled, pre-weathered or another agreed treatment, including sample approval.
Inspection and packingSpecified tests, inspection records, protection, pallets and package identification.
DeliveryNamed dispatch/delivery point, freight scope, insurance where applicable, and destination charges.

Do not assume small orders receive the same unit price as a large plate batch. Setup, handling and packing can affect the total differently. Confirm whether changing a panel size could reduce cutting waste before finalising the design.

Convert price per tonne into price per sheet or square metre

For planning, use a nominal steel density of 7,850 kg/m³. With thickness in millimetres, theoretical mass per square metre is 7.85 × thickness kg/m². For a rectangular blank with all dimensions in millimetres, mass in kilograms is thickness × width × length × 0.00000785.

Example blankTheoretical value
6 mm thickness47.1 kg/m²
6 × 1,000 × 2,000 mm94.2 kg per sheet; 2 m² of flat area
If the quoted material rate is P per metric tonneMaterial amount per sheet = 0.0942 × P
For the same 6 mm sheetMaterial amount per m² = 0.0471 × P

P is your supplier's quoted rate, not a price supplied by this article. The calculation excludes processing, yield losses, finish, packing, freight and taxes. Actual mass may differ due to tolerances, holes and cutouts. Agree whether invoicing is by actual mass, theoretical mass or piece. See the plate weight guide for further planning details.

Build the total delivered cost

Start with the priced material quantity. Add any processing, finish, testing and packing not already included. Then identify transport, insurance and destination charges under the agreed delivery basis. Add applicable import costs and local handling after confirming responsibility for each item. Avoid counting a freight or packing charge twice when it is already part of the offer.

A compact comparison sheet should record the supplier's offered grade, dimensions, quantity basis, included services, delivery scope, payment terms, validity and lead time. Mark unresolved items before comparing the totals. Request a revised quotation if the scope changes.

Send a quotation-ready size list

Specify Corten A, Corten B or ASTM A588 as required by the project. Include thickness × width × length and quantity for every size, tolerances, drawings, finish, material documents and destination. State the target schedule and application, such as façade panels, landscape components or structural plate, so the processing and packing scope can be reviewed.

Use the RFQ checklist or downloadable inquiry template to keep the requirements together.

Frequently asked questions

Is a price per square metre enough to compare panels?

Only when thickness, grade, geometry, processing and finish are the same. State whether the area is the flat blank area or the finished coverage area.

Is Corten A always cheaper than Corten B?

No fixed ranking applies to every order. Compare current offers for the specified material, dimensions, quantity and supply scope.

Does a plate price include pre-weathering and cutting?

Do not assume it does. Request explicit inclusions or separate line items for cutting, forming, surface treatment and inspection.

Can I obtain a firm quote without a destination?

A material-only offer may be possible, but a delivered-cost comparison needs a named destination and a defined delivery scope. Include both in the inquiry.
