Separate material names from trade names
“Corten plate” is common shorthand in project conversations, but it leaves important questions open. COR-TEN is a trademark, while EN, ASTM and GB designations refer to different material requirements. Ask the designer which exact grade and product standard are required. If a licensed trade-name product is essential, identify the required origin and supporting documentation explicitly.
Check the product form
ASTM A588 and A242 are structural material references. ASTM A606 addresses sheet and strip, with its scope depending on the rolled form and thickness. Do not simply transfer an A606 Type 4 description onto an arbitrary heavy plate requirement. In each case, retain the required grade or type and agree the standard edition. The product form matters as much as the familiar number.
Keep the EN suffixes intact
S355J0W, S355J2W, S355J0WP and S355J2WP should not be shortened to S355 in a purchase list. The complete designation carries requirements that cannot be inferred from the surface color. Confirm the delivered condition and any project-specific tests. Likewise, a Q355NH inquiry should retain its applicable Chinese specification and required quality details.
Approve a substitution before purchase
A proposed alternative needs a comparison against the design: chemical and mechanical requirements, thickness range, delivered condition, toughness, weldability and required inspection. A similar nominal strength or rust appearance is not enough. Send the approved grade, standard, dimensions and documents with your inquiry. Keep any alternative clearly marked for review rather than silently changing the specified material.
