A complete grade is a purchasing decision
An order line that says only “A588 weathering plate” leaves a question unanswered: which grade does the project require? ASTM A588/A588M is a structural material specification. Within that specification, Grades A, B and K identify distinct material requirements. Buyers should carry the accepted grade through the drawing, inquiry, quotation and inspection records instead of treating the letters as optional supplier codes.
For a new quotation, begin with the designer’s material schedule. If the schedule names Grade K, request Grade K explicitly. If it simply names A588, resolve the intended grade before accepting an alternative. The cost of clarification at quotation stage is usually easier to control than a material discrepancy discovered after cutting.
What changes between Grades A, B and K?
The grades have different chemical-composition requirements. A similar appearance or a comparable strength description does not establish compliance with another grade. Likewise, the letter K should not be read as a universal ranking above A or B. The relevant question is whether the proposed material satisfies the approved specification for the ordered thickness and application.
| Grade in the inquiry | What to check before acceptance |
|---|---|
| Grade A | Keep Grade A on the order and verify the relevant chemical and mechanical results. |
| Grade B | Review Grade B as its own designation; do not assume an A/B substitution is already approved. |
| Grade K | Confirm the precise grade, product form and documentation with the offered mill material. |
Use the dedicated Grade A, Grade B and Grade K plate pages to organise your inquiry. None of these labels can be verified from a photograph or the colour of a patina.
Thickness, testing and fabrication belong on the same line
ASTM’s public scope covers structural shapes, plates and bars and addresses welded, riveted and bolted construction. For a plate order, identify thickness, width, length, quantity and any delivery-condition requirements. Mechanical acceptance must be checked against the applicable thickness range and the agreed standard edition, rather than copied from a single generic strength number.
If impact testing, ultrasonic examination or additional inspection is needed, write the requirement into the RFQ. Specify the test method, acceptance level and reporting expectation where the project defines them. A request for “standard certificate” is less useful than a clear list of records linked to heat identification.
For welded parts, give the fabricator the approved material designation and delivery condition. The welding procedure, consumables, heat input and any preheat requirements need their own engineering review. An A588 grade letter does not replace that work.
Weathering performance needs a site review
Choosing A588 does not by itself approve an unpainted detail. Review drainage, drying, sheltered crevices, chloride exposure and rust runoff onto adjacent finishes. A bridge component, exterior feature and intermittently wet fabrication may have different exposure conditions even when ordered under the same material standard.
Describe the intended service and any surface expectations when requesting a quotation. Keep visual-sample acceptance separate from material certification: a sample can help agree an initial appearance, while chemical and mechanical records establish the ordered material.
A practical A588 quotation checklist
- Full ASTM A588/A588M reference, required edition and Grade A, B or K.
- Plate dimensions, quantities, tolerances and delivery condition.
- Drawing revisions, cut profiles, edge preparation and identification after processing.
- Material reports, heat traceability and any project-specific tests.
- Exposure, finish expectations, packing, destination and delivery basis.
When an alternative is offered, ask for a written comparison against the original requirement and obtain project approval before ordering. This keeps a sourcing discussion from becoming an undocumented material substitution. For more on checking records, see the material certificate checklist.
