What the current public scope says
ASTM lists A606/A606M-25 as the active edition for high-strength, low-alloy sheet and strip with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance. Its public scope identifies Type 2, Type 4 and Type 5. The designation also covers different rolled forms and delivery conditions; a request for “A606 plate” without form and thickness can create a mismatch before price is discussed.
This is a standards-watch note published in October 2026. It does not claim that every type was introduced in 2025 or that a particular mill has all three types in stock.
Three decisions to make before comparing offers
| Decision | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Type 2, 4 or 5? | Each type has its own requirements; the type should match the drawing and the inspection documents. |
| Sheet, strip or coil? | The A606 scope depends on rolled form and ordered thickness. Confirm the form before applying the designation. |
| Bare or coated service? | Exposure and detailing affect the material choice. Unpainted performance should be reviewed for the actual site. |
The public standard summary describes Type 2 as copper-bearing and Types 4 and 5 as containing additional alloying requirements. It discusses bare use for Types 4 and 5 under suitable exposure. These points are a starting framework, not a substitute for the purchased standard or a project engineer’s approval.
What to put in an A606 RFQ
- State ASTM A606/A606M, the edition and Type 2, 4 or 5 on each line.
- Identify hot- or cold-rolled form, coil or cut length, dimensions and quantity.
- Include the required certificates, identification and any extra tests.
- Describe visible surfaces, cutting or forming, coating and intended exposure.
- Set the destination and delivery basis so freight scope is comparable.
Review the dedicated Type 2 sheet, Type 4 sheet and Type 5 sheet inquiry pages. A supplier can then confirm a proposed material and whether the requested form and dimensions can be offered.
Related question: is A606 a plate standard?
Its scope is for sheet and strip, including specified coil and cut-length forms. If the order is for a heavy structural plate, begin with the governing project drawing and review a relevant plate specification instead of changing the product name alone. The material certificate should trace back to the accepted designation.
