Two JIS references, two starting points
A request for Japanese-standard weathering steel should identify the standard as well as the grade. SMA490BW belongs to JIS G 3114, the reference for hot-rolled atmospheric-corrosion-resistant steels for welded structures. SPA-H belongs to JIS G 3125, the reference for superior atmospheric-corrosion-resistant rolled steels. Sharing a weathering-steel description does not make them interchangeable.
The first question is what the component must do. A load-bearing welded fabrication needs a material decision tied to structural calculations, fabrication procedures and inspection. A formed exterior sheet needs a decision tied to its drawing, support conditions and manufacturing route. Begin with those requirements rather than choosing a familiar trade name.
Reading the full SMA490BW designation
Keep every part of SMA490BW in the inquiry. Within the SMA family, the strength designation and the A/B/C distinction need to match the specified requirements. The W suffix identifies the unpainted-use variant; P variants address painted use. A drawing that names BW should therefore not be shortened to “SMA490” in the purchase order.
Mechanical properties, impact requirements and applicable thickness limits should be checked against the ordered product and agreed JIS edition. Do not read “490” as a guaranteed minimum yield strength for every thickness. Also distinguish ordinary SMA490BW from modified producer grades carrying additional suffixes: the extra notation can indicate a different material specification.
SMA490BW and SPA-H in an RFQ
| Check | SMA490BW | SPA-H |
|---|---|---|
| Governing reference | JIS G 3114 | JIS G 3125 |
| Material context | Weathering steel for welded structural applications | Superior atmospheric-corrosion-resistant hot-rolled steel |
| Order identification | Retain the complete BW designation | Retain SPA-H and the specified product form |
| Acceptance | Approved drawing, thickness, testing and fabrication requirements | Approved drawing, dimensions, processing and inspection requirements |
This table helps separate inquiries; it is not an equivalence table. Review the SMA490BW plate and SPA-H plate and sheet pages with the project material schedule. A proposed substitute requires a documented technical review and approval.
Choose the form before requesting a price
State whether the requirement is mill plate, cut sheet, coil-derived cut lengths or processed blanks. Give thickness, width, length and quantity for each line. For cut parts, add the drawing revision, cutting tolerances, edge condition and marking requirements. These details help a supplier identify an appropriate route and keep quotations comparable.
A material grade also does not establish what is available today. Request confirmation of offered sizes, origin, delivery condition, certificate scope and schedule. If the preferred size cannot be offered, review the proposed alternative before changing the drawing or manufacturing plan.
Unpainted use still depends on detailing
The W designation is not a promise that every exposed surface will perform well in every location. Identify persistent dampness, trapped debris, marine salts or deicing salt spray, and sheltered areas that cannot dry. Show water paths at connections and arrange runoff so it does not damage adjacent porous finishes.
When the site is demanding, the design team should decide whether unpainted service is appropriate or whether another material, coating or detail is needed. Keep this decision separate from an initial rust-colour sample. Surface colour can change while the contractual material designation remains the same.
Information to send with a JIS inquiry
- Complete standard, grade and required edition.
- Product form, delivery condition, sizes and quantities.
- Drawing, welded or formed details and any approved fabrication procedures.
- Required mechanical, impact or supplementary testing and traceability.
- Finish, exposure, packing and destination requirements.
Send the specification as a single material list, and keep unresolved questions visible in the quotation. The RFQ guide and fabrication checklist can help structure that discussion.
JFE Steel: JIS plate references for building applications (SMA, JIS G 3114); Nippon Steel Welding & Engineering: technical Q&A on welding materials for weathering steels (JIS G 3114 and JIS G 3125).
These references explain material families. They do not establish certified origin, a supplier relationship or approval for a particular project.
