LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE

A tree grate must leave room for the tree

The grate opening, support and cleaning method should be designed as a system that can change as the tree grows.

Design for the next maintenance visit

A tree pit grate is likely to be installed for years while the trunk changes. A drawing that only fits today's tree can make later maintenance difficult. Set a target opening and show how inner segments are removed or replaced when more clearance is needed. Assign that decision to the landscape designer and tree specialist.

Plan for access to soil and irrigation. Modular panels can be easier to lift, but the module joints, support frame and lifting method should be detailed so maintenance crews know what can be removed without disturbing paving.

Wet soil, irrigation and de-icing residue can keep parts damp. Avoid details that hold water against the steel for long periods. If the site is unusually wet or salty, have the project team review whether bare weathering steel is suitable and how it will be maintained.

Hand over more than a product photo

  • Provide a section through paving, frame, panel and soil.
  • Mark removable pieces and their handling method.
  • Set inspection and cleaning access.
  • Document the approved material, finish and part identification.

Use the tree grate product inquiry page to prepare dimensions and scope. For neighbouring components, see weathering steel garden edging.

This guide is general buying information. The current material standard, project drawing and agreed purchase documents control technical acceptance and supply.
