Design the opening around the living tree
A tree grate is a removable site component, not a fixed steel plate with a decorative hole. The inner opening must reflect the trunk now and the planned growth allowance. Show the proposed removal or enlargement sequence on the drawing; otherwise a rigid opening can become a maintenance problem as the tree grows.
Decide whether the order is for grate panels alone or includes a supporting frame. Identify the pit edge, module joints and lifting points. Pedestrian traffic, accessibility, slip resistance and any vehicle loading must be established by the responsible project designer rather than inferred from the appearance of a panel.
Tree grate drawing schedule
| Detail | Information needed |
|---|---|
| Plan geometry | Overall outline, pit opening and finished paving level |
| Tree clearance | Trunk opening, growth strategy and removable inner pieces |
| Panel arrangement | Number of segments, joint gaps, lifting method and identification |
| Support frame | Included or excluded scope, bearing locations and anchors |
| Surface | Slot pattern, edge treatment, trip and slip criteria set by design |
| Material | Approved weathering steel grade, thickness and inspection documents |
Drainage and accessible maintenance
Tree pits are often wet and collect leaves, soil and de-icing residue. Detail the assembly so water can drain and maintenance crews can lift panels for cleaning. Avoid hidden water traps at the frame, underside and paving interface. If the site has sustained wetness or severe chloride exposure, assess whether uncoated weathering steel is appropriate for that location.
Early weathering can leave runoff marks on adjacent stone or concrete. The landscape designer should decide where runoff goes and what temporary protection the surrounding finishes need. A sample of the desired visible finish can be agreed separately; photographs do not fix a future patina colour.
Prepare the quotation
- Send a dimensioned pit plan and sectional detail with drawing revision.
- State panel count, frame scope, loading and accessibility criteria.
- Provide grade, thickness, slot pattern and edge requirements.
- Describe drainage, adjacent paving, site exposure and finish expectations.
- Specify quantity, packing, destination and inspection records.
Fabrication method, capacity, schedule and supply scope are confirmed after drawing review. For other site elements, see landscape products and garden edging.
Frequently asked questions
Does the grate include the frame?
Specify whether the order covers panels only or also the support frame, anchors and installation accessories. The quotation will state the agreed scope.
Can one opening size work as the tree grows?
The project designer should set a growth and maintenance strategy. Removable inner pieces or planned panel replacement may be needed.
Is a rusty finish uniform on delivery?
Natural patina varies by exposure. If an initial appearance matters, approve a separate finish sample and acceptable variation before ordering.
