Weathering Steel Bollards

A bollard inquiry starts with its purpose. Define whether the post is a visual boundary, a pedestrian guide or part of a separately engineered protection system.

State the required function first

Weathering steel bollards can be specified as site furniture and visual boundaries. A rust-coloured post is not automatically a vehicle barrier. If impact resistance, crash performance or a regulated protective function is required, provide the tested system criteria and a design approved by the responsible engineer. The material grade alone cannot establish that performance.

Choose the profile, top closure, visibility treatment and spacing in the site plan. Show whether the bollard is fixed, removable or part of an access route. The quotation needs to identify the post, cap, base plate, sleeve, anchors and any backing components as separate scope items.

Avoid water traps at the base

A closed hollow post needs a deliberate moisture strategy. The designer should establish whether it is sealed, vented or drained and how water will behave at a sleeve or footing. Persistent water and trapped debris can impair the intended weathering behaviour. Detail a drip path or protective separation where runoff could stain sensitive paving.

For a pedestrian area, consider how top shape, protrusions and surface temperature affect contact. A site-specific accessibility review determines placement and clear routes. These project decisions are outside a simple material quotation.

Send an item schedule, not only a photograph

  • List the function and performance requirement for each bollard type.
  • Provide plan spacing, section, mounting detail and quantities.
  • State grade, product form, finish and any contrast or accessory requirements.
  • Identify whether anchors, sleeves and installation are included.
  • Give destination, packaging and inspection requirements.

Fabrication capability, current availability and lead time are confirmed in quotation. For related drawing-led metalwork, see processing and fabrication and sign panels.

Frequently asked questions

Are these bollards impact rated?

No impact rating is implied. Send the required test or design criteria for engineering review and a clearly scoped quotation.

Can the post be removable?

A removable sleeve is a separate design and supply item. Include the sleeve, lock and reinstatement detail in the drawing.

Will the base stain paving?

Runoff can mark adjacent materials, especially during early weathering. Set drainage and paving protection details for the site.

Product scope, material, inspection and fabrication availability are confirmed by the supplier for each inquiry. This page provides no stock or performance guarantee.
