Separate the seat from the support
An outdoor bench may use weathering steel for its legs, side plates, back support or complete body. The visible rust finish does not define the seating surface. A purchaser should identify which components people will touch, which pieces are replaceable and whether a separate timber, composite or coated seat is part of the order.
Include the finished seat height, depth, back angle if used, overall length and support positions on an approved drawing. Accessibility, stability, public-contact edges and any local furniture standard must be reviewed by the project designer. A rendering alone cannot establish those requirements.
Bench component schedule
| Component | Specify |
|---|---|
| Seating surface | Material, slat or plate layout, edge radius and finish |
| Steel support | Grade, thickness, formed profile, joints and visible welds |
| Connection | Fasteners, isolation between materials and replaceable parts |
| Mounting | Base plates, anchors, footing interface and included hardware |
| Maintenance | Access for cleaning, drainage and component replacement |
| Site finish | Patina sample, adjacent paving and runoff route |
Plan for touch, water and sunlight
Public seating sees direct skin and clothing contact. Discuss smooth edges, snag-free fasteners and whether a protective or alternative contact surface is required. Exposed metal surfaces can become hot in sun or wet after rain, so the owner should review the intended setting and use.
A bench base that retains wet debris can remain damp longer than exposed panels. Make cleaning access and water paths visible in the drawing. Rust runoff may stain the ground below and should be considered at paving and drainage interfaces.
A quotation needs the whole assembly scope
- Provide plan, elevation and section drawings with dimensions.
- State which seat, back, supports, fasteners and anchors are included.
- Specify the approved base steel grade and any other seat material.
- Mark exposed edges, joint details and finish sample requirements.
- Describe quantity, packaging, destination and installation by others.
Weathering steel parts or complete assemblies are considered against the drawing; no standard size, seat material, stock or installation service is implied here. See other landscape products or planter boxes.
Frequently asked questions
Is the seating surface always weathering steel?
No. The drawing must identify the seat material and whether it is included with the steel support.
Is the bench supplied with anchors?
Anchors and footings are project-specific. List them in the scope so the quotation can confirm what is supplied.
Will a pre-weathered finish prevent staining?
An initial finish sample does not guarantee a fixed future appearance or eliminate runoff. Drainage and site protection remain important.
